Another great episode of Elks101 is in the books. We kinda screwed ourselves by recording at 9:30 AM, which was an hour and a half before Stewart Johnston announced all the changes coming to the CFL this season, but it was the only time we could really record on Monday mornings. We still had a great show. We like to think we always do. Here’s a little breakdown of everything we covered today.
Opening
In the first segment, we speculated. Pure speculation about what Stewart Johnston’s announcement could have been. We talked about an “Americanization of the game” where maybe they do go to four downs, maybe they do shrink the field, maybe they do take out the rouge completely. We gave our likes and dislikes for what we wanted to see from the changes. Again, it’s all kind of a moot point now since the announcement came down, but go check out how close or how far off we were.
Around the league
This was really kind of the same segment. We talked about what could be and what may not be again. Did we want 11 vs 11? Or expansion? More Canadians? We broke all that down in the first two segments here.
Steele’s Reels
I said it last week, but I’ll say it again here. One of the best segments of the podcast. Eddie breaks down video clips from around the league, and that comes with the first-hand pro knowledge you can really only get from him. This week, it was Javon Leake’s punt return and Justin Rankin’s screen for the touchdown. Eddie really wanted to highlight the blocking on both of these plays. The screen, especially. The offensive line has taken its fair share of lumps, and it’s been deserved, but they did a great job on this play, and Eddie broke it all down beautifully.
Rick’s Rants
Rick had a funny one today. He wants people to go when the light turns green when they’re stopped at traffic lights. I get it, it’s a hassle. And I’m one of the worst for it. As soon as that light turns red, I’m on my phone. But overall? I don’t know, kinda seems like a non-issue, but it brought up a fun discussion.
Look ahead to Saskatchewan
We made our picks for the game this Saturday against Saskatchewan. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t overly positive. I’ve been pretty optimistic. In fact, I think I’ve picked them each game since we’ve done the podcast. Not this time. The season feels lost. It’s been two heartbreakers back to back, and now you have to play the best team in the league off an embarrassing loss and a bye? Feels like they get their get-back, unfortunately. But the crowd should be rocking. 30k? Shouldn’t be out of the question. Saskatchewan travels well, and after the last home game against Calgary, anyone who was there should be itching for the environment again.
Betting Lines
We gave out ATS and O/U picks for this week in the CFL. Expect one weird one. The website we used didn’t have lines for the BC vs Toronto game. That’s a weird one. How do you just omit a game? We made up the line anyway. It’s an easy segment, but if you’re like us and love to throw a little down, this segment is for you.
Blind Rankings
We always end the show with our blind rankings of the week. This week, it was Dairy Queen Blizzard flavours: Reese’s, Oreo, Skor, Strawberry Cheesecake, and Cookie Dough. Insanely tough call this week.
That was Elks101 this week. The vibes were definitely at their lowest point. The season kind of feels lost. It is what it is. Better days are on the horizon. The foundation seems to be there. And we had fun regardless. Listen if you want. Love y’all.
