The Canadian Football League officially moves into Week 6, shaking off a thrilling holiday weekend. Week 5 wrapped up with the Edmonton Elks suffering their very first loss of the 2026 regular season, a 36-24 defeat against the BC Lions at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna.
As the league transitions into the Week 6 slate, the division races are tightening up. The Elks sit at 3-1, neck-and-neck with the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the top spot in a highly competitive West Division. Meanwhile, this week’s opponent, the Ottawa Redblacks, finds themselves languishing at the bottom of the East Division with an 0-4 record, desperate to capture their first win of the season. This is a Thursday night battle that will set the tone in the CFL this week.
- Friday Night Football: The Argonauts are set for their 5th consecutive road game travelling to Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg. The big question – will the Bombers have Zach Collaros at the controls?
- Saturday Night Fever: The streaking Calgary Stampeders head east to tangle with the fresh Montreal Alouettes in what could be the fireworks game of the week.
- Sunday Night Sundown: The Tabbies come into Regina to take on the Roughriders after a 1 point loss last week but even a bigger loss behind center. Either Ford or Dolegala have to step up and lead this talented Hamilton team.
The CFL is a must-see sports TV, as 13 of 18 games were comeback wins and 14 of 18 were decided in the last three minutes.
The Lead: The biggest headline heading into Thursday’s matchup at Commonwealth Stadium is “The Bounce Back vs. The Breakthrough.” Edmonton’s undefeated magic was broken by the Lions, largely due to uncharacteristic breakdowns in their defensive front seven. After losing key linebackers Nick Anderson and Brock Mogensen to the six-game injured list, the Elks are leaning heavily on rookie Dariel Djabome. The central storyline will be how quickly Edmonton’s coaching staff can patch up their run defence after giving up 162 rushing yards last week. They face an Ottawa team that is completely back against the wall at 0-4 and treating this game like an absolute must-win. It is a classic trap game scenario for the Elks: will they re-assert dominance at home, or will Ottawa capitalize on their defensive adjustments?
CFL Leaders’ Takeaways: Through Week 5, the Elks lead a few categories in the CFL:
- Yards per rush (6.2 yds)
- Sacks allowed (3)
- Opponent pass efficiency (96.8)
- Opponent TD drive percentage (16.9%)
- #2 Ranked defence
- #6 Ranked special teams
The Rankin File: While the BC Lions managed to bottle him up and “swallow” the Elks’ ground game in Week 5, Rankin’s unique dual-threat skill set remains the focal point of Edmonton’s offensive identity. Look for offensive coordinator adjustments this week designed to get Rankin into open space against Ottawa, allowing him to use his explosive agility to get his historic statistical chase back on track. Rankin is on pace for 1827 rushing yards and 1143 receiving yards.
The Strategic Matchup: As I have previously written in my Elks schedule breakdown, the Elks and RedBlacks conclude their season series with the Green and Gold looking to sweep Ottawa for the second consecutive year and 16th time in series history (2 or more games played in regular season). The Elks also have the opportunity to play in dry weather at home for the first time this year…but don’t put the tools away yet…the ark is not done.
