Elks Game Notes 16.0: Edmonton looks to stay hot against Argonauts

Edmonton Elks Vs Toronto Argonauts Joshua Cephus

The Edmonton Elks delivered their most dominant performance of the season, scoring over 50 points for the 31st time in regular-season history while sweeping the Calgary Stampeders in the Labour Day Classic and Rematch. The victory, which secured the Elks’ first playoff berth since 2019, was fueled by a relentless defense that forced five turnovers and a special teams unit that added a blocked punt touchdown. In relief of the injured Justin Rankin, running back ShunDerrick Powell made a significant impact, rushing for 97 yards on 14 carries, including two explosive runs of over 20 yards. Meanwhile, Cody Fajardo continued his MOP-caliber campaign, completing 14 of 21 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns, achieving an impressive 151.3 QB efficiency rating before being relieved by Taylor Powell.

Week 16 of the CFL season features three games:

  • Game 1: Montreal Alouettes at Hamilton Tiger-Cats: Friday, September 18: Friday night football features the Montreal Alouettes travelling to Tim Horton’s Field and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Als are on a two game road trip while the Tabbies are coming off the bye week. Both teams are coming off losses. Montreal has secured a playoff spot while Hamilton is looking up the playoff ladder as they are 6 points behind western cross-over team.
  • Game 2: Edmonton Elks at Toronto Argonauts: Saturday, September 19: The Elks beat the Argos back in Week 11 42-12 at Commonwealth and now travel east to Toronto where they have lost 3 consecutive games and outscored 105-78. Chad Kelly will need his gunslinger mentality to take down the 1st place Elks.
  • Game 3: Ottawa RedBlacks at Calgary Stampeders Saturday, September 19. Is this the week? It is the bottom of the east division vs the bottom of the west division. Last week, the Redblacks came within a last second drive of getting their first win of the year. The Stampeders are coming off back-to-back losses to the Elks and are looking for a lot of help to get back into the playoff picture.

The Lead: The Elks should not be reading their press clippings and remain highly vigilant, as this contest possesses all the characteristics of a potential trap game. While the matchup may appear favorable on paper, the Toronto Argonauts remain one of the most dangerous teams in the CFL, largely due to Chad Kelly’s aggressive, gunslinger passing style. Furthermore, the Elks have struggled historically in Toronto, losing their previous three visits and failing to secure a win against the Argos during the month of September since 2010. Given these historical trends and the opponent’s volatility, the Elks face a significant challenge.

CFL Leaders Takeaways: Elks category leaders through Week 16 in the CFL:

  • Red zone opportunities (51)
  • Points allowed (24.8/game)
  • Opponent 1st downs (262)
  • Opponent yds/play (6.37)
  • Opponent pass efficiency (88.3)
  • Pass knockdowns (58)
  • Interceptions (19)
  • Opponent TD Drive percentage (18%)
  • Turnovers forced (40)
  • Points off turnovers (133)
  • Turnover ratio (+19)
  • Kickoff average (70.7 yds)
  • #1 ranked defece
  • #7 ranked speical teams

The Fajardo File: This is Regular Season start number 100 for Cody Fajardo. His record is 59-39-1. For career season highs, he needs: 53 attempts, 47 completions, and 521 passing yards.

Fajardo has already set a personal best of 23 passing TDs and also has a streak of 15 consecutive games with a touchdown pass, a personal regular season best (16 is his record including playoffs).

The Strategic Matchup: The pivotal strategic matchup will depend on the adjustments made by the Elks’ coaching staff regarding the roster, pending the availability of Justin Rankin. A potential shift toward an Elks pass-heavy offensive strategy could precipitate a high-scoring shootout—a scenario the Argonauts may initially welcome until they contend with the league’s top-ranked defense and forced turnover machine. Ultimately, this contest is likely to be decided by which team executes more efficiently and commits fewer errors.
