The Edmonton Elks and Saskatchewan Roughriders capped Week 9 with another 2-point heavyweight duel. Saskatchewan’s short-yardage QB, Tommy Stevens, had 13 carries and 3 TDs to spearhead the Riders’ scoring. Elks rookie linebacker Dariel Djabome led the Elks defence with 9 tackles (8 defensive – ST).
Tyrell Ford continued his all-star performance with his 3rd interception of the season with a highlight special teams tackle. Edmonton remains on top of the CFL’s West Division with a 6-2 record, with the Riders in second at 5-2. This sets up for a Week 21 tie-breaker game between these two teams with possible play-off implications on the line.
Week 10 of the CFL season features 4 East-West battles in cross-country matchups:
- Game 1: Calgary Stampeders at Toronto Argonauts Thursday, August 6: The Argonauts finally get to host a home game in the confines of BMO Field as they host the Stampeders. The Argos are looking to avenge their 58-36 loss from Week 5 at McMahon Stadium.
- Game 2: Ottawa Redblacks at Saskatchewan Roughriders Friday August 7: The Roughriders return home to take on the winless REDBLACKS. Jeff Reinbold takes over Defensive Coordinator responsibilities as Ottawa is looking to win its first game of the year
- Game 3: Edmonton Elks at Montreal Alouettes August 8: This is a rematch of the Week 2 32-29 OT Win by the Elks. The Elks are looking to go back on top of the CFL standings while the Alouettes are looking to hold off a West Division contender.
- Game 4: Hamilton Tiger-Cats at BC Lions August 8: This is also a rematch game as the Tiger-Cats won 41-27 in Week 3. This game will look much different with both teams’ starting QBs from Week 3 have changed. If Nathan Rourke returns from a 3-week layoff due to an injured shoulder, it will be a major boost. This one is a ‘must-win’ for the Lions if they want to keep pace in the playoff race.
The Lead: This week’s headline matchup features two of the CFL’s premiere powerhouses going head-to-head. Montreal wideout Tyson Philpot is putting together a historic season, leading an explosive air attack alongside Tyler Snead and quarterback Davis Alexander. But don’t sleep on the Edmonton sideline: Cody Fajardo ranks second in passing yards right behind Alexander and is pacing toward a career-best 5,798-yard campaign. Facing his former team with targets like Austin Mack, TJ Luther, and dynamic playmaker Justin Rankin at his disposal, Fajardo has the Elks’ offense firing on all cylinders. Get ready for a high-scoring aerial duel.
CFL Leaders Takeaways: Elks category leaders through Week 9 in the CFL:
- Red zone opportunities (32)
- Yards after catch (1212)
- Opponent yards/play (6.43)
- Interceptions (12),
- Forced fumbles (8)
- Points allowed (25.0 pts/game),
- Opponent pass efficiency (89.5),
- Opponent TD drive percentage (19.3%)
- #1 ranked defence
- #6 ranked Special Teams
The Rankin File: Justin Rankin’s explosive start has captured the full attention of defensive coordinators across the CFL. Sitting fourth in league rushing with 589 yards and tied for second with seven rushing touchdowns, Rankin remains one of the league’s premier offensive weapons. Even as his production has slowed slightly in recent weeks, rival coaching staffs are putting in overtime in the film room to figure out how to neutralize one of the CFL’s most dangerous playmakers.
The Strategic Matchup: The easy analysis says the team with the better passing defence will win this game, but the way these teams throw the ball around, it may be more of a special teams battle. The team that has the better average starting position, a.k.a. the shorter field, will have the upper hand. Eyes will be squarely focused on special teams coverage as these two CFL favourites finish their regular season series.
