Coming off a bye week, The Edmonton Elks sit tied for first in the CFL’s West Division with a 1-0 record. Historically, this is familiar territory: Edmonton has started a season 1-0 forty-five times, successfully parlaying that momentum into a 2-0 start on 31 occasions. They look to do it again during a packed four-game CFL slate. Friday Night Football kicks off with the Lions visiting the Tiger-Cats followed by a massive Saturday triple-header. The Argos face the RedBlacks, the Elks host the Alouettes and the Roughriders battle the Stampeders in Calgary. If the early season is any indication, expect a thriller – every CFL game so far has been decided by 10 points or fewer, delivering plenty of last-minute theatrics.
The Lead: This is the Elks home opener. They have a 50-24-2 record in home openers with a 3-2-0 record against Montreal. This historic match-up has seen 11 Grey Cup battles with Edmonton leading that series 8-3.
Early Season Takeaways: In a downpour, the Elks run game and 4 takeaways proved to be too much for Ottawa. The Alouettes have 2 victories and QB, Davis Alexander who boasts a flawless 13-0 as a regular-season starter. The matchup promises plenty of fireworks, highlighting a battle of dynamic offensive duos: Justin Rankin Rankin and Austin Mack for the Elks against Tyson Philpot and Tyler Snead.
The Steady Veteran: Cody Fajardo doesn’t have a perfect 13-0 record as a starter but does have a 5-1 lifetime mark against his old squad in Montreal. The Alouettes know exactly what the veteran QB brings to the table, but Fajardo has the poise, grit and experience to lead the Elks to a massive win..
The Rankin File: Justin Rankin started the season with a bang with 13 carries for 102 yds and 1 TD. He also had 5 catches for 94 yds. He needs to produce against the Als as he had 17 carries for 76 yds in 2 games against Montreal last season.with 7 catches, 89 yds and 1 TD. History shows that keeping him moving is the key to Edmonton’s success: the Elks have won five consecutive games when Rankin rushes for 100 yards or more.
The Strategic Matchup: As I have previously written in my Elks schedule breakdown, Edmonton has a massive home-opener jinx to bust this week, carrying an 0-5 record in their last five home debuts. When you factor in Jason Maas’s dominant history in this series (11-2), and Davis Alexander’s perfect 13-0 regular-season starting record, a level playing field suddenly looks like an overwhelming mountain to climb. Fortunately, by taking care of business in Week 1, this squad shattered a brutal 15-game losing streak in the month of June. They aren’t just tearing down mountains anymore – they’re starting to build up some real downhill momentum.
