The Edmonton Elks bounced back in spectacular fashion last week, dominating the Ottawa Redblacks in a 40-17 blowout victory at Commonwealth Stadium.
Running back Justin Rankin was the undisputed star of the game, shredding Ottawa’s defence for three big-play touchdowns—two on the ground as part of his 107 rushing yards, and another through the air. Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo orchestrated a highly efficient offensive attack, throwing for 340 yards and two touchdowns while going 19-of-24 through the air. On the flip side, the winless Redblacks struggled immensely under the pressure; despite throwing for 293 yards, Ottawa quarterback Jake Maier was plagued by a relentless Elks defence that intercepted him four times, leaving Ottawa searching for answers at 0-5 on the season.
Looking ahead to Week 7 of the CFL season—as we’ve cruised past the earlier weeks of the summer—the schedule promises some fantastic matchups starting Friday, July 17. The action kicks off with the Edmonton Elks hosting the well-rested B.C. Lions. Saturday features a high-stakes doubleheader: first, the Montreal Alouettes visit the Calgary Stampeders in a battle of powerhouse teams, followed by a classic Ontario rivalry as the Toronto Argonauts head down the road to take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Week 7 wraps up on Sunday, July 19, with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers heading east to clash with the Ottawa Redblacks, who are desperately searching for a breakthrough to salvage their season and add another chapter to the Dru Brown – Redblacks saga.
The Lead: The biggest headline is whether the Elks can get the monkey, or in this case, the Lion, off their back. The Elks are 1-12 against the Lions in their last 13 games. The point differential is 229 points in those 14 games. However, the Elks are +27 points in 5 games this year, while the Lions are -14 in 4 games. If the Lions win, they will sweep the season series for the 12th time and 4 of the last 5 years.
CFL Leaders Takeaways: Through Week 5, the Elks lead a few categories in the CFL:
- Avg gain rushing (6.3 yds),
- Rushing yards (136.6 yds/game)
- Points allowed (24.2 pts/game),
- Opponent pass efficiency (88.3),
- Opponent TD drive percentage (16.4%)
- #2 Ranked defence
- #6 Ranked Special Teams
The Rankin File: Justin Rankin is performing at a level that borders on the mythical. On pace for 1,847 rushing yards and 1,069 receiving yards, Rankin is threatening to become the founding member of the CFL’s 1000/1000 club. However, the B.C. Lions managed to make Rankin look pedestrian in their 36-24 victory over the Elks 2 weeks ago. With the venue switching to Edmonton, can B.C. corral the MOP frontrunner a second time, or will Rankin run wild on home turf?
The Strategic Matchup: While the marquee matchup pits the Elks’ ground game against the Lions’ run defence, the game will truly be decided when B.C.’s offence takes the field. This game represents a massive personal rematch for Elks rookie linebacker Dariel Djabome. Now, with more starting reps under his belt, Djabome gets his “second kick at the cat.” If he leads the defence into great coverages, limits the running lanes, and disrupts B.C.’s rhythm, the Elks have a very real path to victory.
