The Edmonton Elks entered halftime in a competitive contest against the visiting Toronto Argonauts before pulling away for a decisive 30-point victory. This dominant performance was fueled by six Toronto turnovers, a 301-yard passing effort by Cody Fajardo, and a time of possession exceeding 37 minutes. The Elks’ defense also contributed to the scoreboard, highlighted by an 85-yard pick-sixdefence from JJ Ross, which marked the first of his two interceptions on the day. With this win, the Elks have secured sole possession of first place in the West Division.

Week 12 of the CFL season features 4 traditional match-ups:

  • Game 1: Ottawa RedBlacks at Montreal Alouettes Thursday, Aug. 20: It’s a battle of ‘first’ versus the ‘worst.’ The league-leading Alouettes return from their bye week riding a six-game winning streak, while the winless RedBlacks look to snap a 15-game losing skid. Will the Alouettes dominate, or are they walking into a trap game where Ottawa finally secures their first win?
  • Game 2: Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Edmonton Elks Friday, Aug. 21: This is a crucial four-point divisional matchup. With the Blue Bombers undefeated on the road and the Elks boasting a 4-1 record at Commonwealth Stadium, the stakes couldn’t be higher. This game is a must win for Winnipeg if they hope to challenge Edmonton for the division lead; an Elks victory would secure the season series and extend their cushion to six points. It promises to be a classic Friday night football showdown.
  • Game 3: Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Toronto Argonauts Saturday, Aug. 22: The Argonauts are seeking to avenge their one-point loss to the Tiger-Cats in Week 7. The victor will gain a significant advantage in securing a home playoff game in the Eastern Division while simultaneously insulating themselves against potential crossover threats from the West Division. Notably, this match marks the Tiger-Cats’ only visit to BMO Field this season.
  • Game 4: Saskatchewan Roughriders at BC Lions Sunday, Aug. 23: The Saskatchewan Roughriders conclude their two-game road trip in Vancouver to face the streaking BC Lions. The Lions aim to narrow the gap in the West Division standings and even the season series against the Roughriders. As the defending Grey Cup champions strive to remain in contention to host the West Final, a victory over BC would be a significant achievement.

The Lead: The Edmonton Elks have historically struggled against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, dropping 16 of their last 20 meetings dating back to 2017. However, the Elks enter this matchup on a two-game winning streak against Winnipeg and are vying for their first season series victory over the Bombers since 2016. In their previous encounter eight weeks ago at Princess Auto Stadium, the two teams proved evenly matched in a physical, hard hitting contest, and both sides are expected to bring that same intensity to this pivotal showdown.

CFL Leaders Takeaways: Elks category leaders through Week 11 in the CFL:

  • Field goals (29)
  • First downs (225)
  • Yards after catch (1415)
  • Points allowed (26.0/game)
  • Pass knockdowns (40)
  • Interceptions (16)
  • Forced fumbles (10)
  • Fumbles recovered (9)
  • Turnovers forced (31)
  • Points off turnovers (103)
  • Turnover ratio (+15)
  • Opponent pass efficiency (90.8),
  • #1 Ranked defence
  • #6 Ranked Special Teams

The Strategic Matchup: The Elks’ success should mirror their approach in the season’s opening meeting with the Bombers: establishing an early lead, maintaining a physical presence, and stifling the Bombers’ rushing attack. Conversely, the Bombers must leverage their veteran experience by minimizing errors, exploiting any defensive lapses, and controlling the clock. This pivotal four-point contest has the potential to define the trajectory of both teams’ seasons.
