The 3-0 Edmonton Elks take on the 0-3 BC Lions in a huge CFL West Division matchup in Touchdown Kelowna. Both teams are streaking but in opposite directions. The Elks are hoping to widen the gap while the Lions hope to regress back to the mean. Before getting to this Saturday matchup, the CFL has Thursday and Friday night games to warm us up:
- Thursday Kickoff: The Toronto Argonauts head west to visit the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium.
- Friday Night Football: The unofficial battle of the Riders sees Saskatchewan Roughriders heading to the nation’s capital to take on the Ottawa Redblacks.
- Sunday Nighter: The Sunday night game features a traditional Grey Cup match up, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers head east to take on the Hamilton Tiger Cats.
The CFL rollercoaster continues with the torrid scoring pace of 63.5 points per game, with 12 of the first 14 games decided in the last 3 minutes.
The Lead:The Lions have been kicking the stuffing out of the Elks winning 9 of the last 10 against them. Nathan Rourke is a perfect 6-0 against Edmonton with three 300+ yd passing games and was a perfect 10-0 against Alberta teams until last weekend. The Elks hope to sweep Touchdown Kelowna for the Alberta teams and send the Lions back to their den 0-4 for the first time since 2011
CFL Leaders Takeaways: Through Week 4, the Elks lead a few categories in the CFL:
- Rushing (148.0 yds/game),
- Sacks allowed (2),
- Points allowed (22.7/game),
- Opponent yards/play (6.34)
- Opponent pass efficiency (99.6),
- Avg. field position (43.7),
- Opponent 2nd down conversion pct (46.4%) and
- Opponent TD drive percentage (13.3%)
- #1 Ranked defence
- #5 Ranked Special Teams
The Rankin File: Justin Rankin is being touted for the first 1000-1000 season….1000 yds rushing and 1000 yds receiving. After 3 games and going into CFL Week 5, Rankin leads the CFL in rushing with 387 rushing yards and 23rd in receiving with 154 receiving yards. Rankin would need to average 40.9 yds rushing and 56.4 yds receiving over the remaining 15 games to achieve that mark. The Elks have extended their streak by winning seven consecutive games when Rankin rushes for 100 yards or more.
The Strategic Matchup: As I have previously written in my Elks schedule breakdown, the Lions have been a thorn in the Edmonton’s side for the past 12 games, with the EE winning 1 and losing 11. Here is hoping the Elks turn into the evil twin of Androcles and return that thorn to the Lions’ paw.
